It seems to be either feast or famine with my blog posts. I actually like to blog, but there are so many things I like to do and so little time. Yesterday I tried something different for one of my old soap recipes. I love to blend fragrances and during the summer, Lavender and Lemongrass are my absolute favorite blends. In the past, this soap has had a rather lackluster appearance. Lemongrass fragrance oil results in a kind of dull translucent soap. I decided to add Titanium Dioxide to the main batch before separating into colors. I love how this turned out! I did a video of this batch. I have a new camera and while the video is much better, it takes hours to upload.

Another episode in the continuing saga, Soap Diaries. I was not a happy camper when I cut my soap this morning. I jumped out of bed, excited to see how my fantastic idea turned out. Everything looked promising as I hoisted the loaf from the mold. As I peeled down the paper I noticed that it looked very greasy. Undaunted, I cut the first slice. Crumbles. What? I quickly did a "zap" test which told me that it was not lye. (A zap test consists of touching ones tongue to the offending leakage to determine if it is lye or oil. Do not try this at home.) I did not get zapped. And, by the way, fragrance oil is not good for breakfast. I finally determined that the crumbles were from the layer of soap shreds that I had sprinkled between the layers. It did not have the desired aesthetic result that I was trying to achieve. As I cut each slice, it oozed fragrance oil. You can see it in the picture below. The bottom is darkening. As it cures, its exposure to the air will continue the darkening process. The top surprised me in that it hasn't darkened at all.
I am not yet ready to call this a failed batch. We'll do an assessment in a week or so. I think the soap shreds, because they were at a different stage of saponification, did not incorporate well as a layer. It's possible that the two layers will come apart. Again, we shall see.
I am now headed for the shower with a slice of Monkey Bar soap which turned out very nice indeed. :)
Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else.
Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector.
The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity--greedy, dishonest, adulterous--or even like this tax collector.
I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.'
But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.'
I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

No April Fool's jokes here today. Been a long day. I started out with the 2 older grandkids this morning and then after they went home, the two younger ones came. Madison is starting to try and put words together and she is soooo cute. Meghan wasn't a happy camper today so we rocked most of the afternoon.
After the kids went home I decided to make soap. I tried something different. I did 2 layers of 2 different fragrances. Between the two fragrances I layered in some shredded soap from a batch that the fragrance oil flashed out on. I plan to brush mica on top. I started to do it on the end and then realized I had better wait until it cools. I'm a little nervous because I can feel the soap heating up and I am hoping that it doesn't crack. The two fragrance oils I used both have some vanilla content, but I am hoping that one layer will be lighter than the other. I'm not sure how much vanilla is in either one because the supplier doesn't list it. I am going by the amount that other FO suppliers list. I'm a little nervous because I can see some moisture on the edges and in the grooves of the top.
I don't know if it's condensation from the soap heating up or the fragrance oil pooling. I can deal with either one as long as it doesn't crack.
I used 60 ounces of oils and divided the batch. But when I poured out 30 ounces, the two batches did not look at all even. Thankfully, I remembered that I had added in 22 ounces of lye water. I was panicked there for a minute because I was thinking I had more oils than I did and a lye adjustment would need to be made. So now we wait and see how it turns out.
The two fragrance oils I used were sample sizes that I ordered a while back and never used. I am trying to use up a lot of odds and ends. I have an entire bucket of shredded soap thanks to my salad shooter. Some of it will be molded into soap balls. Some of it will be re-batched in the crock-pot if I can ever get the hang of it. I also use the soap shreds in my home-made laundry soap so there isn't a lot of waste.
Yesterday we took Clayton and Claire to the dinosaur exhibit at the Dow museum. They were very well behaved and we all had a good time. Claire loved playing the xylophone!
and they both loved digging for dinosaur bones.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - Week 2 day 2.
Today is a carb down day. That means I get one starch that must be eaten before 3 pm. This morning it will be oatmeal. Oatmeal with peanut butter is just the best. I should explain that I am re-doing week 2 because I messed it up last week. A beloved daughter of mine (hi Neen Bean) pointed out that I have a habit of starting things and then not following through. I did say at the beginning that I was going to give this 8 weeks. But in usual "me" fashion I started tweaking the plan in week 2. I've shifted days so that my carb up day is on Sunday.
Yesterday I forgot to take my weights out on the road with me so I didn't get the weight training in. But considering the mood I was in yesterday morning, I did well to even get the walk in. It is pouring outside so I will be using the treadmill this morning and watching last week's "Loser" which taped very poorly.
I made some peppermint candles last night. They smelled wonderful as I was pouring, but the tester that I burned was disappointing. I don't know if it's the wick, or that fact that I used part essential oil along with the fragrance oil. I have the tester on a candle warmer right now to see if it smells truer to the fragrance.

I saw a whitetail this morning. I love it when I see deer. He came out of the maple woods, headed across the road into the ditch, caught wind of me and bounded back across the road and into the woods.
When I got back I the tester candle on the warmer smelled nice and minty. I'm guessing it is the combination of the wick and flame that is altering the scent. I guess I'll have to try a batch with straight peppermint FO rather than using part EO.

a Pharisee invited him to dine at his home.
He entered and reclined at table to eat.
The Pharisee was amazed to see
that he did not observe the prescribed washing before the meal.
The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees!
Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish,
inside you are filled with plunder and evil.
You fools!
Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?
But as to what is within, give alms,
and behold, everything will be clean for you.”
Thoughts from the cornfield:
In order to live civilly, each culture has its own set of laws. Ideally, laws give us boundaries on our behavior so that we can live in peace with our neighbors. The Pharisees used Mosaic law to browbeat the poor. Yet, never did the Pharisees do anything practical to help them.
I find it interesting that this particular Pharisee invited Jesus to his home. One can only wonder what the motivation was. This is another instance in which Jesus points out hypocrisy. Here he doesn't bother with parables. He tells them outright what they are. And still they don't get it.
